Combined Cultural and Birding Activities in Rwanda and Burundi


The tour starts and ends in Kigali Rwanda

Day 01: Arrival at Kigali Airport
Check in at Golf Hills Residence Hotel Kigali and later have an afternoon tour of the city; Visit of Gisozi Genocide memorial and Kimironko market, overnight at your hotel.

Day 02: Transfer to Akagera National Park

After breakfast drive to Akagera National Park. On arrival you will enjoy watching the birds within the open large savannah, there is also a possibility of spotting various animals from a relatively far distance. Here you will see one of the finest picturesque views of savanna plains in Rwanda, looking out into the beautiful River Akagera. Dinner and overnight at Akagera Game Lodge.

Day 03: Bird watching in Akagera National Park
After breakfast, spend the whole day bird watching in the beautiful park. Enjoy a picnic lunch and later return to your accommodation. Some of the bird species you will see are the Bennett's Woodpecker, Black-headed Chat, White-Black-collared Barbet, Miombo Wren-warbler, Long-toed Lapwing, White-winged Warbler, Swamp Flycatcher and the Tabora Cisticola.  Overnight at Akagera Game Lodge.

Day 04: Transfer to Kigali,
Check in at Golf Hill Residence, an afternoon short city Tour, visit Belgian Soldiers memorial, State House of Habyarimana.

Day 05: Lake Kivu-Gisenyi
After breakfast drive to Lake Kivu Gisenyi. Visit the Islands of Lake Kivu, relax at the lake’s beautiful shores, also visit Rwanda/Congo border. Overnight at Paradis Malahide hotel or Similar

Day 06: Butare National Museum

Early morning, transfer to Butare, the cultural town of Rwanda rich in history diversity. Visit the Butare National Museum where group of Intore Dancers perform, overnight at hotel Mater di Boncili, Butare.

Day 07: Birding in Nyungwe National Park
Transfer to the Nyungwe Forest National Park .This  is the most important ornithological site in Rwanda. A total of 27 Albertine Rift endemics are to be found in here, the highest concentration found in any single park in Africa. It Can be difficult spotting birds in Nyungwe Forest National Park, as the forest can be very dense and several bird species prefer to stay on the canopy than within the forest. Guided tours are helpful to locate and identify the birds with good viewing areas.
Overnight at Gisakura Guest House hotel.

Day 08: Nyungwe Forest National Park

Guided nature walks, and birding, in the terrains of Nyungwe Forest National Park where even a canopy walk is available. Overnight at Gisakura Guest House hotel.

Day 09: Drive to Bujumbura
After breakfast, Cross the Rwanda / Burundi border post at Kanyaru and drive on to Bujumbura the capital city of Burundi. Overnight at Safari Gate Hotel or Similar

Day 10: Rusizi National Park-Rumonge
Visit of Rusizi national park where you can see the giant hippos and numerous birds relax at the shores of Lake Tanganyika.  Drive towards Rumonge and visit the Fishermen village, a chance to meet the locals doing their daily chores of fishing which is their main source of livelihood in that particular area of Burundi.

At Tanganyika Blue Bay Resort, enjoying ‘mukeke’ fresh fish from the lake, found nowhere else in the world except in Lake Tanganyika. Evening drive back to Bujumbura for overnight at Safari Gate Hotel or similar

Day 11: Source of Nile-Karera waterfalls
After breakfast, we take the direction to the Source of Nile, and then Karera waterfalls .On our route, magnificent tea plantations and landscapes will make you carry your camera ready for pictures. After karera waterfalls, drive to Gitega, the second town and colonial capital of Burundi. Visit of Gitega National Museum with its collection of artefacts, Gitega city administrative offices,Catholic location of Mushasha and its different schools, Overnight at Tropitel Hotel.

Day 12: Gishora drum sanctuary-Gitega National Museum.


After Breakfast visit of Gitega National Museum with its collection of artifacts, Gitega city administrative offices, Catholic location of Mushasha and its different schools. Later, visit of the drum sanctuary of Gishora. Gishora is one of the famous drum sites of Burundi. Gishora is perched on the top of a hill at 7km from the urban centre of Gitega. Visit the drum sanctuary of Gishora to relive the cultural tradition of Burundi which is becoming scarcer. The site recreates an architectural complex of Royal palace, rarely found elsewhere in the country. Here drummers' performance can be watched. After drive towards Bujumbura for overnight at Safari Gate Hotel or similar

Day 13: Kirundo Birds Lake

After an early breakfast, we drive 200 kilometers from Bujumbura, in the North-East of Burundi, Kirundo a region of extensive depressions with many lakes and rich in bird life. It is an area of great scenic beauty where the visitor may discover, by canoe, lakes like Cohoha, the bird lake renowned for its ornithological reserve; and other lakes like Kacamirinda and Kanzigiri. On the road leading to Birds Lakes, stop at Teza Tea Plantation then proceed to Kirundo. Lunch and overnight at Top Hill Residence.

Day 14: Kirundo Birds Lakes-Kigali
Early morning, visit again the birds lakes to explore what you might have missed the previous day.
After lunch drive to Kigali for overnight at Golf Hill Residence Hotel.

Day 15: Airport Transfer
